With so many grasses across central Queensland paddocks, knowing what you’re looking at isn’t always easy. When it comes to King Blue Grass (Dichanthium queenslandicum), getting it right matters.
FBA is introducing a new resource to help land managers across central Queensland identify King Blue Grass in their paddocks.
This easy-to-use pocket field guide provides a clear description of King Blue Grass, making it easier to distinguish from other grasses that look similar. It is pocket-sized and weather-proof, so land managers can carry it with them while working in the paddock.
King Blue Grass is a perennial grass that has experienced a significant decline in its distribution since European settlement. The species plays a vital role in maintaining grassland ecosystems by supporting biodiversity, stabilising soils, and providing habitat for native fauna.

Better identification is an important step in protecting and managing this endangered native grass.
FBA Land Management Coordinator Annie May said this resource will help build confidence in identifying the species.
“Correctly identifying King Blue Grass is a key step in protecting and managing it. This pocket field guide gives land managers and environmental practitioners the knowledge they need to identify the species in the paddock,” she said.
