The Momentum Behind FBA’s Slow Down for Koalas Campaign Continues to Grow in CQ

20 April, 2026

A powerful FBA initiative to protect endangered koalas in the Clarke-Connors Range is proving to be a legacy project with communities still driving the campaign almost a year after its launch.

The popular resources were shipped out by the 100’s last year to every primary school in the Isaac Region and handed out at many events and businesses who became collection points. FBA’s Slow Down for Koalas campaign is being championed by local libraries who are helping keep the message alive where it matters most in valuable koala habitat.

Isaac Libraries, who have recently re-stocked campaign resources and placed them front and centre, have made it easier than ever for the community to get involved and show their support.

Since 2023, FBA has been working alongside passionate land managers and First Nations peoples, supported by $4.5 million from the Australian Government’s Saving Koalas Fund, to restore habitat, reduce bushfire risk, and create safer wildlife corridors.

But lasting change goes beyond on-ground works and that’s where the community is stepping up.

From bumper stickers encouraging drivers to slow down on koala hotspots like the Peak Downs Highway, to kids activity books inspiring the next generation of ‘Koala Heroes’, this campaign is about collective action.

The campaign was inspired by research from CQUniversity that found that 145 koalas were hit by vehicles in just one year along a 51km stretch of the Peak Downs Highway—83% did not survive.

By picking up a bumper sticker, sharing the message, or engaging with these resources, the community is playing a vital role in protecting our koalas.

It’s incredible to see this campaign take on a life of its own being driven by people who care and are committed to making a difference.

Together, we’re creating safer roads, stronger awareness, and a future where koalas can thrive.
