Location
Located in central Queensland on Australia’s east coast, the Fitzroy Region covers a land area of more than 156,000 square kilometres (just under 9.1%* of Queensland’s mainland area).
Covering a land area 2.4 times* the size of Tasmania, the Fitzroy Region includes the largest river system draining Australia’s east coast, the Fitzroy Basin (which is the largest water catchment draining into the Great Barrier Reef). Six smaller coastal catchments – The Styx, Shoalwater, Waterpark, Curtis Island, Calliope and Boyne – also drain into the Southern Great Barrier Reef lagoon.
