Improving Pasture Productivity for Sustainable Grazing in the Brigalow Bet from the Soil Up

Opterra are running an independent workshop that examines practical experience with farming programs to address the decline in pasture productivity.

Workshop includes:

  • Soil testing & fertility improvement
  • Tillage/seeding/inputs/operations
  • Grazing management
  • All costs, production, and income across varying seasons
  • A ‘start to finish’ look with great photo records throughout
  • Balanced with proven science and economics
  • Local soil cores to understand the basic properties of these soils
  • Steps to implement and manage risk in ‘Brigalow’ pasture improvement

Presenters:

Josh Connoly is Farm Manager at Banana Station. Over the last 5 years he has completed 3000 ha of pasture improvement, aiming to recover lost productivity, meet legislated requirements and resolve issues such as pasture dieback. Josh is a pasture agronomist with 15 years’ experience in Brigalow soils; he will present practical details ‘start to finish’ of this Brigalow Belt pasture improvement.

Dr Chris Dowling, Back Paddock Coy P/L is a leading Australian soils and plant nutrition specialist, with extensive research and practical experience in helping improve productivity, efficiency, profitability, and environmental outcomes. Chris will review key trends in soils and vegetation, where we are/how we got there and key strategies to rebuild the soil asset.

Peter Spies TEC is a farmer, soil scientist and agronomist. He is highly experienced across Queensland grazing industries including Brigalow soils. Peter has an exceptional background for this workshop having worked in soil conservation, soil mapping, pastures, and land management planning. Peter operates a commercial beef cattle enterprise and stud in NQ. Peter will consider improved pasture management options for local conditions, differing soil and vegetation types; options for attendees to plan and implement programs for their local conditions.
