Black-breasted Button-quail
Black-breasted Button-quail
Vulnerable under Queensland’s Nature Conservation Act 1992 and Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999
This plump, quail-shaped bird has three forward-facing toes and no hind toe (different from true quails) and takes its name from the distinctive black chest markings on the female.
More plainly coloured, the male is responsible for incubating the eggs and protecting the nest (a bit like emus and scrub turkeys). Find out more about what they eat, where they live and why they’re special here.
