Fitzroy NRM Region proud to host 5 Reef Champion finalists!

Across five categories, five finalists of the 2018 Reef Champion Awards originate from the Fitzroy NRM region.
Two landholders, one primary school student, an extension officer and a community group have all been shortlisted for demonstrating excellence in their efforts to safeguard the future of the Great Barrier Reef.
Fitzroy Basin Association Inc. (FBA), who nominated each of the finalists, would like to extend a huge congratulations to Yeppoon Inlet Association, 10-year-old Sid Crawshaw, grazier Matthew Hinz and pineapple farmer Nathan Stevens. FBA also supported the nomination of extension officer John Day by Burnett Mary Regional Group.
The winners will be announced at the Yeppoon Town Hall on 21 November 2018 at a function being coordinated by the Queensland and Australian governments with the support of the Reef Alliance group.
FBA Chief Executive Officer Paul Birch says the cross-section of Fitzroy finalists across five of the eight categories demonstrates the region’s amazing efforts across the board in protecting our natural assets.
These five finalists are exemplary instances of innovation, passion and dedication across a diverse range of industries,” he said.
“Their stories and achievements are truly inspirational, and that is what builds momentum in regional communities.”
Since 2013, the Fitzroy NRM region has recorded a 9.6% reduction in sediment entering the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. Mr Birch says that this figure is proof that the combination of local projects and initiatives are making substantial change happen.

The title of finalist is not easily achieved, and it shows that these individuals, enterprises and community groups are among the best.
