Creating a Koala-Friendly CQ

FBA is leading a powerful campaign to protect endangered koalas in central Queensland’s Clarke-Connors Range. With $4.5 million from the Australian Government’s Saving Koalas Fund, FBA has been working with passionate land managers and First Nations peoples since 2023 to restore vital koala habitat, reduce bushfire risks, and create safer wildlife corridors.

But habitat restoration alone isn’t enough. That’s why FBA is launching two new tools to rally the wider community around koala conservation:

Koala Bumper Stickers
FBA is calling on the community to show their support, stick a bumper sticker on their cars and slow down for Koalas. With significant numbers of koalas killed on roads like the Peak Downs Highway, these stickers urge drivers to slow down and protect wildlife. Each one is a visible pledge to drive mindfully and spark change behind the wheel.

Koala Kids Activity Books
These fun and educational books are being distributed to schools across the Clarke-Connors Range. They teach children about koalas, celebrate local conservation efforts, and empower kids to become ‘Koala Heroes.’

Collect a Bumper Sticker

Recent research by CQUniversity shows that in just one year, 145 koalas were hit by vehicles on a 51km stretch of the Peak Downs Highway—83% of them died. Most were healthy animals simply trying to cross the road.

FBA is looking to change these odds by creating more awareness of the issue and advocating for community to collect their bumper sticker and put it on their cars today to do their part in making the Peak Down Highway safer for koalas.

“Everyone has a role to play in saving koalas,” said FBA Communications Officer Tayla Hill, who led the campaign’s development. “These products are all about sparking action—on the roads, in schools, and across our communities.”

“I cannot wait to see these products reach the community of central Queensland. It’s been such a great experience having the opportunity to create a campaign that can make a difference in koala conservation efforts,” Tayla said.

“The bumper stickers were inspired by koala vehicle strike statistics coming from Queensland highways, specifically the Peak Downs Highway. We’re hoping the stickers will not only raise awareness of this issue but create a movement of accountability on the roads”.
