Dinosaurs, barking owls, art exhibit and war memorabilia this school holidays at FLOW Visitors Centre

Have you run out of ideas on how to entertain the kids these holidays? Why not visit FLOW Visitors Centre and learn about those things that bark, scream, and go bump in the night? Or examine old war medals, badges and buttons in the Queensland Remembers – 1939-1945 exhibition?
Fitzroy Basin Association Inc. Chief Executive Officer Paul Birch said FLOW was an ideal place to keep your kids occupied while learning about our local history and animals at the same time.
“At night we often hear weird and intriguing noises made by our local animals—but we don’t know which animal makes it or why,” Mr Birch said.
“FLOW staff have teamed with Birdlife Capricornia, Wildlife Encounters and Wildlife Rockhampton to present a range of talks and workshops at FLOW these holidays, there will even be special wildlife visitors on some days!
“We’ll also be talking about animal homes and how we can help give animals a nesting box, which is a perfect DIY project to do at home over the holidays,” he said.
In addition to the workshops, FLOW is hosting travelling exhibitions from the Queensland Museum. Discover Rockhampton’s very own megafauna that lived here between 30,000 and 1.8 million years ago.
Mr Birch said children can become palaeontologists for the day and dig for huge replica prehistoric bones and use microscopes to examine them.
“Or explore Queensland Remembers – 1939-1945, where you can magnify war medals, badges and buttons and discover their meaning. There is also a selection of war posters and uniforms on display.
“A special art exhibition, Owl Journey, was also making FLOW its home for the holidays, and coincides with the release of a new local children’s book,” he said.
FLOW Visitors Centre is located in the Old Post Office building in East Street. It is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 10am until 4pm. Workshop dates and times can be found at www.fba.org.au/calendar and bookings can be made by emailing flow@fba.org.au.
