Catchment Champions Workshop
On the 25
th
and 26
th
November 2009, a meeting was held in Rockhampton (DPI Centre) with
a key representative from each of the catchments. These
representatives were subsequently referred to as the
“Champion” of their catchment. The aim of the initial
consultation with the Champions was to design the process and
content for the catchment workshops, as well as gain local
knowledge which provided baseline information for the Environmental
Values tables.

Workshops were subsequently held around the Fitzroy Basin (4 Feb-
18 Mar 2010) to consult with stakeholders and community from each
of the 10 catchment areas.
The workshops were an all day event where tools such as Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) were used to support the local knowledge
from stakeholders to provide information on the Environmental
Values of the waterways for the catchment in question.

Note: The Isaac and Connors workshops were combined and held at the
one location following advice from catchment Champions. Due to
flooding the Comet workshop was held in conjunction with the Upper

Traditional Owner Workshop (15 March 2010)
While traditional owners were invited to the catchment workshops,
this additional workshop was held to firstly discuss the inputs
into all the draft EVs and then to capture their knowledge about
their cultural and spiritual values for the Fitzroy Basin
waterways. In general, the draft EVs from the traditional owner
workshop were consistent with those from the catchment workshops.

Basin-wide Information Day (19 March 2010)
This event provided background information on and progress towards
setting Environmental Values and Water Quality Objectives in the
Fitzroy Basin. The day began with an outline of the process for
setting environmental values and water quality objectives.
Preliminary results from the catchment workshops were made
available for perusal. Draft water quality guidelines were
discussed. Alternative management strategies along with tools and
studies to assess associated impacts were covered and monitoring
and reporting strategies outlined. Presentations provided on the
day are available below.
This day also provided interested attendees with the opportunity to
ask questions about the project and related issues. The day
was successful in bringing together representatives from the
Australian, Queensland and Local government, primary industries,
mining, industry and conservation sectors along with other people
interested in the process.
