The Fitzroy Basin Association's Sustainable Landscapes Program
works in partnership with local producer groups, local Landcare
groups, regional NRM groups, industry groups, local agencies and
consultants, and local and state government departments.
Below are some of the projects and groups for which FBA are proud
partners.
Central Queensland Better Economic and Environmental Futures
(CQBEEF)
The Better Economic and Environmental Futures project encourages
Central Queensland beef producers to explore and adopt sustainable
technologies that will enhance the long term profitability of their
enterprises through self-directed producer groups.

Land Condition Remote Monitoring in the Fitzroy Basin
The Fitzroy Basin Association in collaboration with
DEEDI
and the CSIRO have developed new capacity to measure and monitor
land condition and ground cover in the Fitzroy Basin.
The land condition remote monitoring in the Fitzroy Basin project
is based on almost 20 years of satellite imagery depicting annual
changes in ground cover, resource condition and trend.

Central Queensland Sustainable Farming Systems (CQSFS)
FBA is working in partnership with
DEEDI
to achieve more economically and environmentally sustainable grain
production systems in central Queensland. To do this, we focus on:
- practical learning opportunities
- information sharing between growers
- leading-edge research and development
- fostering best practice farming systems
- promoting natural resource management.
More information can be found on the
CQSFS website
.
Healthy Soils, Healthy Future
A joint project between FBA,
DEEDI
, Northern Gulf Resource Management Group and Landcare to address
the NRM and productivity issues of soil fertility decline, soil
organic carbon loss, water quality detriment and erosion in Central
and Northern QLD.

Australian Soil Carbon Accreditation Scheme
A joint project between the Fitzroy Basin Association and
13 other organisations
to develop a model which will create a
collaborative and progressive market-based instrument to help
address a wide range of environmental issues. With an overall
aim to reverse the carbon cycle by storing more carbon in the soil
and rewarding Australian landholders for improving their soils.
Under the Australian Soil Carbon Accreditation Scheme (ASCAS),
carbon sequestration rates will be measured within Defined
Sequestration Areas (DSAs) located on regeneratively managed
broadacre cropping and grazing lands. Soil Credits will be
paid annually and retrospectively for validated soil carbon
increases above initial baseline levels determined within each DSA.

Baralaba Landcare Grazing Monitoring Group
The Baralaba Landcare Grazing Group have been investigating ways of
improving land condition and increased productivity of grazing
lands in the Baralaba and surrounding districts. The group has
demonstrated that combined improvement of pastures and animal
grazing techniques has led to increased ground cover and pasture
species composition.
The group is now shifting direction to viewing the health of the
soil as an integral component within the system with the
commencement of several projects which will aim to investigate the
soil, plant and animal relationships. These projects will
ultimately deal with establishing a greater understanding of soil
health (biology and nutrition) with plant/animal health and how
this translates to increased productivity and sustainability.
The Fitzroy Basin Association supports the Baralaba Landcare
Grazing Group , which also works in partnership with the Taroom
Landcare Group and DEEDI - Sustainable Farming Systems in Central
Queensland.
Grains Best Management Practice (BMP) Program
Grains BMP is a joint initiative of the Fitzroy Basin Association,
AgForce Grains and DEEDI. Its designed to help grain growers
identify areas within their enterprise that can be modified to
improve farm management and profitability. There are five modules
being developed initially, which include:
- Pesticide Application
- Managing Rainfall
- Farm Design and Layout
- Managing Soil Fertility
- Integrated Pest Management
